Song of the week: October, U2

This time of year, I turn off talk radio and listen to music... I do a lot of deep cleaning this time of year... Thanksgiving is just a few short weeks away.... family and friends will be spending some time here...I dance a lot when I clean... (that's one of the reasons it takes me so long to clean). Anyway... one of my favorite albums to listen to from beginning to end is U2's sophomore record, October. They were so young- so full of passion, their talent so apparent. Back when we were kids and sitting in Monkey Man's basement, we all marveled at the fact that they were only a couple of years older than us... The most powerful aspect of this album was U2's proclamation of their faith... It's not a bible thumping proclamation... Gloria??? With a Shout?? Listen to the entire album... er... CD if you get a chance. If you've never listened... it's time... It's not dated... It's rock n roll, baby.

Although it is October, we are still experiencing ridiculously hot humid weather. Since June, we have had one day where it has rained... maybe Algore is right...

In any event... the days are getting shorter... we don't expect the fall colors to be vibrant this year due to the dry summer, however we are getting a little color on the trees... This time of year opens the door to fall... an incredibly melancholy time of year for me although, I have grown to embrace and enjoy it, thanks to Michael. It's time to make a trip up to Amish country and down to Keeneland. All in due time... but definitely before the winds turn cold...

Have a great week everyone!

Song of the week: Back in Flesh, Wall of Voodoo

Call of the West was an album that will forever be embedded in my brain. It was an album that Jimi and Monkey played over and over and over. The guys loved Stan Ridgeway's voice and as I recall they both did a great imitation of Stan... Wait, who am I kidding? I did an amazing imitation myself... I liked Wall of Voodoo because they were danceable (in a New Wave, 80's kind of way). Those less fortunate that may not be familiar with this music selection are more apt to remember a fun little diddy they did called Mexican Radio. In any event, the video clip this week is from a movie called Urgh! A Music War which I would love to have on DVD, but unfortunately it isn't available. I think I may post additional videos from Urgh! A Music War, but then again, I still have my Betamax tape that I could pop in and watch on my Sony Betamax player...

Ramble:

It's hot here. I mean really freaking hot... We haven't had weather like this in a number of years... we hit 100 degree temperatures a couple of days last week and well... jeez... it's just hot. It has also been incredibly dry--- we have had very little rain this summer. Grass is dead. Trees are stressed. Michael is happy, he hasn't had to cut the grass in ages.

Adriaan's memorial is set for the last Sunday of this month. I was addressing the invitations last night for his memorial/life celebration (the reason for the lateness of this post). For my mom in law's sake, I'll be glad when it's over.

On other front's I'm hosting girlfriend JoAnna's baby shower. I'm thinking about taking wagers based on the photographs on Jedi Master Rob's blog as to when JoAnna is gonna deliver her baby. Her actual due date is November 11.... I'm hosting a shower on September 16. I have all kinds of things planned... yes... sorry... Jo... I know I said no games... but well... yeah I hate shower games too... Possibly more than anyone else on this planet... be it a wedding shower or a baby shower... but... with that said.... we are going to have one game... heh heh heh... but I'll make up for the game... promise.

What the heck... I snagged the pictures...

The photo on the left was taken on 5/31 and the photo on the right was taken on 8/2. Go ahead. Place your bets. When do you think girlfriend Jo is going to deliver her baby??? If you decide to play...

  • In the comments post the date you believe JoAnna is going to deliver her baby.
  • You can not select a date that has already been picked.
  • Also include your methodology in determining the date.
  • If anyone plays I'll add the names (with links when applicable) and dates at the bottom of this post. When Jo delivers the baby, whoever is closest to her actual delivery date will get a special little prize.

I'll be the first one to guess... I think JoAnna is going to go early. My guess is 10/31... yes that's Halloween... Jo and the Jedi got married on Halloween, so it would be just like them to have a baby on that date.

Delivery Dates:

Song of the week: Summertime, Mica Paris

Porgy and Bess is one of my all time favorites (and I just checked, but I do not have this listed on my favorite musicals list... shame on me!) When I first started dating Michael... I would make him listen to George Gershwin's An American in Paris over and over again (in between sessions of King Crimson). There is nothing like a Gershwin tune, ya know? Thankfully he liked it.

I heard Mica Paris a number of years ago on some radio program and thought-- what a wonderfully soulful voice- rich and textured. Then to hear her singing Summertime.... the song and her voice are simply a marriage made in the music heavens... sheer perfection. George Gershwin would most definitely approve.

Ramble:

No words today... too hot... Imagine yourself on a front porch sitting in an old rocking chair... it creaks just a tad. You are down south somewhere... possibly in Mobile, Pascagoula, Baton Rouge or down in the Big Easy... sipping some iced lemonade, or maybe you prefer some sweet tea....listening to the background buzz of locusts in the trees and just wishin' and hopin' for a breeze...

Enjoy your Sunday. It's going to be a hot lazy one here.

Photos from the garden tour I took with Mom and Michael last month...

I Know I Need a Small Vacation

Rain - Hi 67 Lo 50 for Baghdad, Iraq

Song of the week: Wichita Lineman, performed by Glen Campbell, written by Jimmy Webb.

I have always liked Glen Campbell. I remember he had a television show when I was really little... possibly 4 or 5 years old. In speaking with my grandmother, she said that I loved the show and I would stop whatever I was doing and watch him sing. There is something I find comforting in his voice, the lyrics, the melody. In all the songs that I adore that he performed there is a certain longing... something is just on the horizon...just out of reach, it always feels like winter to me... but that warmth is always there... just around the corner...

Ramble:

I don't feel like blogging... Michael and I took a drive yesterday... instead here are some photos.

You can click on the photographs to enlarge, if you so desire.

The first two are actually from Thursday... On my way home from work, thought I'd try and snap a few pictures of the after effects of the ice storm we had. Unfortunately, the images really don't capture the overwhelming beauty of the everything being turned to crystal. Had I gotten to the park 20 minutes earlier (and not done so many donuts in the parking lot), the sunset would have been spectacular...

Michael and I ran a couple of errands and decided to take his new truck out for a ride... This is heading south down Route 42....

About an hour south of home the snow started to come down pretty hard, so it was time to head back home...

These were huge icicles coming out of the rock alongside the road... the thing that had us scratching our heads was the color... one was bright blue... another yellow, another red... someone surely had too much time on their hands or another possible theory is that primary colored icicles are a direct result of global warming....

The roads became snow covered pretty quickly...

Horseys!

Solitude...
Wichita Lineman

I am a lineman for the county and I drive the main road
Searchin' in the sun for another overload
I hear you singin' in the wire, I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

I know I need a small vacation but it don't look like rain
And if it snows that stretch down south won't ever stand the strain
And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

And I need you more than want you, and I want you for all time
And the Wichita Lineman is still on the line

Have a great week everyone!

Wednesday at the Movies, Wild Hogs

Michael hates going to the movies... I love going to the movies but it is a concession I have made... we don't go and if I want to go, I'll go by myself... However, I believe my Scootertrash Hubby wants to see this one...

Definitely a journey movie--- comedy... City Slickers with a touch of Fandango comes to mind...

Happy Valentine's Day, Honey!

P.S. In staying with the bad weather theme of this past Sunday, my company is on a 2 hour delay!! Woo Hoo!! Actually, I was supposed to take my grandfather in for a biopsy today, but seeing as how we are on a Level 2 Snow (it's a sheet of ice out there) Emergency... we're going to reschedule... so, rather than make my quickie morning rounds... I'm going back to bed... It's COLD!!

Song of the week: Born to Hum, Erin McKeown

I actually heard Erin McKeown for the first time on Hugh Hewitt's show a while back and ever since I was hooked. She has a quirky voice and music that can't really be nicely categorized. The link takes you to her website and there you will be introduced to more of her music. Enjoy.

So, I've started back on my research of terrorist organizations and should start posting in the next couple of weeks. And I bet you thought I forgot....
**
I don't have much this week... Snow in this part of the world really throws a wrench in the works. One of the things that happens here (Cincinnati - AKA the tri-state area--- Northern Kentucky, Southeastern Indiana, and Southwestern Ohio) is that topic becomes the single focus of all thought, activity, and conversation.

A few things you should know if you are traveling to this area during a snowfall... Mind you, we had about 6 inches of snow this past Tuesday.

First of all, the local television and radio stations will lament over the pending doom for at least 48 hours prior to the "disastrous" weather. And not wanting to be undermined by the other stations, there is a bit of oneupmanship that occurs (which reminds me of a Monty Python skit from Flying Circus- "We used to live in a shoebox in the middle of the road." -"Well we used to get up half an hour before we went to bed" -too obscure, huh?). The weathermen will interrupt normally scheduled programs to bring you the latest from Doppler 75,000 where it shows the cloud mass slowly making it's way to us.... This in turn will instantly send the masses into a frenzy of which you must run to the store and buy the following: bread, milk, toilet paper. I still have to wonder what folks are making with these ingredients... Whatever it is, I hope they don't invite me over for dinner... Please note: no one is going to the gas station to fill their cars... this is because we want to be able to discuss fuel line freeze ups and running out of gas on the highway during the snowfall at a later date.

OK... Then you have a full 24 hours where you will need to listen to us discuss the impending doom... Women at work, men at work will talk about the forecast and like the kids at home (yes, at home because the forecast of inevitable snow has caused the schools to cancel for the day-- the sun is shining...nothing on the ground but... FOR GAWD'S SAKE!! SNOW IS COMING!!!) we will wonder out loud whether or not our employers will let us leave early from work... Then the big day... the day that it is going to snow... all schools have canceled with a couple of rogue exceptions... at work there is lots of gnashing of teeth and panic. At about lunch time the snow begins to fall... it's falling about 1 inch per hour... (to be perfectly frank, that is quite a bit)... the folks at work aren't working... we are panicking!! Some souls go out at lunch and come back and report that the roads are already BAAAADDD. OH - MY - GAWD!
"It took me 20 minutes to get to the bottom of the hill!"
"Traffic is already backed up."
"I didn't see one snowplow." It's gonna be bad at rush hour, they better let us leave early!"

BLAH BLAH BLAH.

So, the City Manager of Cincinnati expressed concern and asked that all employers in Cincinnati let their employees leave early... Nice... how much money was lost? So, at about 3 o'clock my boss expressed that we too needed to hit the dusty snow covered trail... We had to evacuate the building by 4 o'clock. To hell with the customers across the nation... to hell with it all... SAFETY FIRST. I was just happy-- I got to leave work early!! WOOHOO!!

So, Tuesday what normally takes me about 25 minutes took me 1 1/2 hours to get home. Not bad considering the roads were snow covered and the cars were bumper to bumper and travelling a maximum of 15 miles per hour... For some it took 3++ hours... others pulled off and stayed at a hotel... fair enough... some roads are impassable under these conditions-- there are lots of rolling hills in this part of the country.

Snow stops completely by 9 o'clock.... snow plows and salt trucks do their thing over night.

Wednesday... back to work.... the entire day was spent swapping stories... more oneupmanship on the stories... and eyewitness reports of crazies on the road.... I saw my fair share... This is the part that drives me nuts...

"talk talk blah blah and then we ran out of gas..." (remember, we do not fill our gas tanks...)

So, yesterday we were at a car dealership and there is already a forecast on the horizon for more snow...... kill me now...............

We are a bunch of pansies.... wusses.... Have we become so weak that we can't handle a little snow? "But our taxes pay for them to clean the roads!!" OK, fine.... guess what... sometimes... hey... perhaps all the time... the government, be it local or federal... can't do for us... imagine... Sometimes mother nature has a different plan for us... ya know?

Besides, how embarrassing.... I like to think that Michael and I can fend for ourselves for a bit of time without help from mother government. I really don't like the thought of them wiping my nose or arse... What would happen if something really bad happened? Say another 9/11 or Katrina or worse? You don't think that the bad guys aren't taking notice? A little conspiracy thinking on my part? Perhaps...

So the next time you hear one of us whining in the Midwest about the weather... tell us to put a sock in it...... really.... I mean it....

Blogs and Links to Check Out This Week:

I have wanted to incorporate a post from Rich at Isn't It Rich for quite some time, but haven't found the opportunity. He wrote a great piece about a month ago that shouldn't be forgotten.

"There are those who would have you think that President Bush and the United States of America are the embodiment of evil and I would remit that those who do are the very ones who deny that evil even exists."

Have a great week everyone!

Born to Hum by Erin McKeown

Once in the spring of my twenty-fourth year
I had nothing to say
With a dangling promise and a terrible past
I threw all the words away
We were born to hum

You were the last in my twenty-fourth year
To make a demand of my voice
I tickled your ear and I laughed in your face
I gave you my choice
We were born to hum
We were born to hum
Hum
Hum

So as a gradual running
A kinda relief
Settles on my face
Once in a while I complain to myself
Nothing gets done
Nothing's in place

I, I would rather hum
I, I would rather hum

Hum
Hum
Hum

Am I prepared?

Sunny Hi 106 Lo 79 for Baghdad, Iraq

Song of the week: New Orleans is a Mighty Good Town, Eddy Raven with Buckwheat Zydeco

My rambling blog as you know are my very personal observations of the human heart and soul. I usually reflect on things from days past and how it has an impact today. My mind is reeling over what has happened to our brothers and sisters in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. There hasn't been enough distance to put this in perspective-- the enormity of it all, the repercussions and the ripple effect will no doubt have an impact on us for a very long time.

I am troubled by the images of evil-stealing of items- NOT food, mayhem, assault, rape and murder. I have heard and read it countless times..." times like this bring out the best and worst in people". I submit that times like this actually MAGNIFY what was already there in the heart of that individual. That is what troubles me so. I am disturbed and deeply saddened by those that would do harm to others while in this crippled state.

I'm frustrated by the finger pointing... I think we should start by looking at ourselves. Am I prepared for a disaster? No. Could I survive on my own given similar circumstances? On my own, I'm thinking I have a 50% shot...with my husband I have no doubt, we would survive. After the events of 9/11, President Bush called the American people to stay vigilant, to be prepared and help our fellow man. "Become involved", he said... I signed up immediately for our County Emergency Response Team. (At the time, a local organization didn't even exist. The Department of Homeland Security had just been created, I emailed Citizen Corps. to volunteer. About a year later, I started getting email from the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security. Then this past July, I received an invitation to attend training classes in August--26 hours + certification testing. It was canceled... due to lack of interest... lack of interest... one more time... It was canceled due to lack of interest... OK. Another class will be held in November... hopefully, I'll get another shot... So, do we wait for the government to get their act together? No. Do I wait for my community to become involved? No. I'm sure there are counties within the state that have moved a little quicker than my county. The point is... we have to save ourselves...and from 9/11/01 to 9/3/05 the only thing that Kentucky has to show for Homeland Security is a really cool website... a lot of good that will do us in the event there is no infrastructure. Is this a pessimistic way of looking at things? Perhaps. My mother and my grandparents taught me to be self sufficient, depend on no one- a pretty valuable lesson based on what we have witnessed.

I am not criticizing the folks that decided to "ride" out the storm. I understand some people could not leave. Given the same circumstances, Michael and I may may have done the same thing. I think of the line from Forest Gump... Lt. Dan (Gary Sinise) says, "I'm living off the government tit." Or how about, "Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you will not have to listen to his incessant whining about how hungry he is."

On the other hand I am encouraged and thankful for the good works of so many and this is what needs to be the focus. Afterall, good always conquers evil. People helping each other. A nation coming together and reaching out to those who have lost everything. The stories of heroism that are starting to trickle out. The acts of kindness. Strangers helping strangers.

We are better than the slugs that were causing havoc in the city of New Orleans. We are better than those that would take advantage of folks that have nothing. Case in point--- On my way up to see my brother yesterday (North on Interstate 75) convoys of military vehicles were heading south. People in cars were honking and waving at them (me included). At a rest stop that I pulled into, there were several cars from Louisiana. I was witness to strangers from Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Canada giving money to these weary folks. I watched one family from Michigan take their very nice Coleman cooler and put it in their trunk. There was nothing in the trunk of the car except for that cooler.

This has been an awful tragedy and will take years to recover. My hope is that some good comes of this, that our moral compass is corrected a bit. We are losing our way and it is times like this when we are reminded of the things that truly matter.

A new life is what truly matters. Let me introduce you to Kaeli Olivia, my one day old niece and the reason for my trek up to Toledo.

Prior to my blog I used to send out a weekly email. Here is a portion of one sent on 4/10/05.

OK- So Michael and I just came back today from a “business trip” to New Orleans. The company I work for sent me down to a conference and trade show—(more like an appreciation party held by one of our distributors…) It was their annual crawfish boil. (Up until this past Tuesday, swear to goodness, I thought they were calling it a Crawfish Ball. If you have ever been to N’Awlins, our hotel is located in the Warehouse District-

On Wednesday, I visited Northrop Grumman Ship Systems- Ingalls in Pascagoula, Mississippi. I had the privilege of getting to board and tour ALL levels of 2 separate ships, LHD 8- the USS Makin Island and LPD 17- the USS San Antonio. Words and pictures can not describe how amazing these structures were. If I did not have a guide, I most assuredly would have gotten lost. I was permitted to climb around on all levels of both ships- you can not imagine how huge these things are. On LHD 8, the link above reflects current photos of it in modules as it has not been put together yet. Now the LPD is almost finished (it was moved from Avondale to Ingalls a number of months ago. It is behind schedule- it should have only taken 4 years) If you ever have an opportunity to tour a ship, I urge you to do so. OK. I’ll stop w/ the geek/work talk… By the way--- I was caught in the worst storm driving back to New Orleans after we left the shipyard…

Thursday morning, Michael and I went to the D Day Museum, a must if you are a history buff- a must if you aren’t. http://www.ddaymuseum.org. Not only was the European front covered, but so was the Pacific.

If you have never been to New Orleans (NOLA, N’Awlins, etc), I suggest you make it a destination if you love any of the following: food, spirits, music, art, history, Southern Hospitality, and 500,000 friends… The people -locals and tourists (except for one street car driver) are friendly - everyone is your friend (just know when you are being looked at as a mark). Did I mention spirits? http://www.earthcam.com/usa/louisiana/neworleans/bourbonstreet/index.php?cam=3 . http://www.neworleansonline.com/tours-attractions/festivals/fqfest.html or http://fqf.neworleans.com or http://www.frenchquarter.com/events/french-quarter-festival-2005.php

This past weekend was the French Quarter Festival! Tons of good food and drink and MUSIC everywhere… Had a blast… these folks know how to have a party.

Ask Michael about “open containers” and drive through daiquiri joints---

Michael’s best moments in NOLA— 1) our carriage ride, 2) our mean street car driver on the Riverwalk line (oh my gosh, she was mean!!) - “Dees hee ah streetcah do not go to Canal. If you’d want to git on de Canal, you got to get off dis cah!! , 3) eating massive amounts of crawfish at the crawfish “ball” (I did too!!).

My best moments – 1) our carriage ride, 2) watching the weirdoes on Jackson Square
3) the street performers 4) the food…

http://www.jackson-square.com/index.htm

http://www.neworleanschurches.com/stlouiscath/stlouiscath.htm

Places we ate—Dragos--- the best bbq oysters… Mr. B’s http://www.mrbsbistro.com and of course Pat O’Brien’s http://www.patobriens.com/tour.html . We did not make it to CafĂ© Du Monde http://www.cafedumonde.com/main.html … the line was stupid long…

I hope all these folks are ok. I hope they got out.

Terry-I hope you had a Happy Birthday

Kaeli- Welcome to the world

Have a great week everyone. Michael and I are off to Cleveland in a few hours for the airshow.
